2023 Outdoor Living Trends

2023 Outdoor Living Trends

April 27, 2023

Although Spring 2023 in Wisconsin has been colder than usual, never fear, warmer weather is around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about bringing out the patio furniture.

Yardzen’s expert designers collected responses from over one million homeowners across the United States to compile a yearly report on trends in the outdoor living space. Here are some highlights from the Outdoor Living Trends Report.

Organic-style. Organic shapes and textures are replacing the rigidity of clean lines, stark contrasts, and equally spaced plantings. Low maintenance shrubs, flowers, and cobblestone pathways create a natural vibe that draws you to unplug and simply enjoy being outside. Natural and organic materials such as stone, wood, and bamboo have become popular choices for outdoor furniture and decor, reflecting a desire for a more authentic and natural aesthetic.

Outdoor entertaining. Warmer weather brings gatherings with family and friends. Spending more time outside has led to an increased interest in pizza ovens, large dining tables, outdoor bars, outdoor lighting and firepits, and outdoor heaters.

Growing your own food. The pandemic had people rediscovering their love of gardening in droves. Interest in edible gardens, raised beds, and greenhouses have increased each year since 2020.

Kid spaces. As parents aim to keep their kids off screens, there has been an increased desire to make backyards more kid-friendly. Treehouses, slides and play structures are among the most popular trends.

Fire features. Fire pits, fire tables, and outdoor fireplaces have become a staple of outdoor living spaces, providing warmth, light, and a cozy atmosphere for gatherings. They are also a great addition for cooler weather, extending the usability of outdoor spaces.

Outdoor Wellness. The focus on health has grown in recent years as people seek to create a relaxing oasis in their own backyard. Interest in saunas, hot tubs, outdoor showers, and wind chimes continues to grow.

Visual Impact. Homeowners are creating visual impact in their outdoor spaces by using height to create drama. Pergolas, pathways, trellises, and gazebos with climbing vines are popular right now.
